I’m sure, you still remember those catchy phrases at the top of articles, emails, or ads that grab your attention.
They are very important, but sometimes they can be tricky to get right.
Bu don't worry, though – I've been there many times too, and today I'm going to share a little secret I learned that made a big difference for me.
When it comes to writing headlines, there's one key thing you should always remember.
Lead with the benefit.
Yes, but what does that mean exactly? Well, let me break it down for you.
When you're scrolling through your phone what makes you stop and grab your attention?
Most of the time something that catches your eye because it offers you something good, right?
And that's exactly what we're aiming for with our headlines, subject lines or captions.
Now, I used to make this mistake all the time. I'd write headlines that were all about the "how" instead of the "what's in it for me."
But then I learned this little trick, and it changed everything.
So let me give you an example.
Say you've got this amazing method that helps people double their results or sales. (Sounds pretty awesome, right?) And for sure you might be tempted to write a headline like this:
"Use our XYZ method to double your sales"
Now, that's not terrible, it tells people what you're offering. But let's flip it around and lead with the benefit:
"Double your sales with our XYZ method that follows a step-by-step approach"
See the difference?
The second one jumps right to the good stuff – doubling profits.
That's what people really care about. They want to know how your product or service will make their lives better, easier, or more profitable.
Now, every time I write a headline, I ask myself, what's the biggest benefit for my reader? Then I put that front and center. Like giving your audience a sneak peek of the good stuff right from the start.
But here's the thing – it's not just about headlines.
This benefit-first approach can work wonders in all kinds of writing.
Whether you're crafting an email, a social media post, blogs or even just talking to a friend about a cool new product you found, leading with the benefit can make a huge difference.
So, how can you start using this trick right away?
Here's a quick step-by-step guide:
1. Think about what you're offering (a product, service, idea, etc.).
2. Ask yourself, "What's the biggest benefit for the person reading this?"
3. Put that benefit right at the beginning of your headline.
4. Mention your method or product after the benefit.
That's it!
Pretty simple, right? And the best part is, you can start doing this right now.
So next time you're writing anything – an email, a post, even a text message – give it a try. I bet you'll see the difference right away.
Now, I know changing how you write can feel a bit weird at first.
Trust me, I've been there! But stick with it.
The more you practice, the more natural it'll feel. And before you know it, you'll be writing killer headlines without even thinking about it.
Remember, it's all about putting your reader first.
What do they want?
What problem can you solve for them?
When you focus on that, your writing becomes so much more powerful and engaging.
Now Its Your Turn!
I'd love to hear how this works for you. Try crafting a headline using the benefit-first approach. And I bet you'll come up with something amazing!
Cheers,
Jenni Delos Reyes
P.S.
Remember: Focus on the benefit and notice how your words change things.
You can do this!
